Free from normies.

It was a domain of nerds and academics and reportedly a very civil place.
It went to shit with the Eternal September of 1993.
Usenet autists namefagging with their real names and thinking they are important

Something like that seems inevitable.
It couldn't just remain a niche domain, it had too much economic potential.

Cool as shit, with very weird American RPGs, platformers and learning games. As a seven year-old I got to experience Avatar for the Commodore64. There were also several early pirated DOS dating games that relied on multiple choice, or text-based responses.

I only got to use windows 95. A lot of cheese pizza back then.
But speaking as the interwebs, it was mostly forums, and it ran very slowly. Everything ran on disks and parents were very protective of their machines. Sega Genesis seemed faster and more interesting at the time so we mainly played baseball.
