Eh, I mean the Soviet Army was such a polyglot mix of races, ethnicities and cultures that politics was really the only thing you could use to unite them. It didn't help though that party membership often led to inept bureaucrats being made into officers who's idea of tactical brilliance was pamphlets and rote memorization of Communist doctrine.

I mean you say 'slav' but you have to think that all the peoples of the Balkans are technically 'slavs' yet would a Serb and a Croat ever consider themselves ethnically or culturally similar? Obviously not since they fought for centuries to remain separate.

Chuikov's book is way better, using the much more logical claim that the reason the Red Army was able to beat the German one was a result of tactical and operational factors, not what motivated individual soldiers.

In regards to the city fighting itself, he primarily focuses on how urban combat forces firefighting to happen at shorter ranges, which hurt the Germans in a variety of ways, most especially their greater reliance on fire support in the forms of things like artillery and airplanes and tanks, wheras the Soviet individual arms tended to operate more independently; while the German system was amazing when it worked, when battlefield factors started to break it down, it broke down hard.

If you ever get the chance, read both Red Road From Stalingrad by Abdulin and Eastern Front Combat From Stalingrad to Berlin. Both are Memoirs of both sides who were at Stalingrad.
