Because Iraq had anywhere from 5-1 to 10-1 (depending on year) advantages in every area of materiel, which is what actually matters in modern war. And, point of fact, no one actually knows what Iranian losses were. Nor Iraqi ones with any certainty. If you believe each side about their own losses, which is usually a good bet as far as wars go, losses were about even.

"Most sources" don't say that. Aside from the claims made by the sides themselves we have nothing but guesses to go on. And by the Iranians' own records, 123,220 killed, 60,711 missing, and 42,875 POW.

also when they attempted to cripple Iraq economically by mining the persian gulf and attacking tankers flagged to countries like Panama or Liberia that were carrying Iraqi oil the superpowers stepped in to stop them. It was clear that Iran was not going to be allowed to win.

Pollack has a whole chapter on Saudi Arabia and how their military is the worst of all Arab armies. The tl;dr version is that their military is basically a country club for the rich. It's entirely dependent on foreign 'advisors' from e.g. Pakistan even to do basic shit like maintain equipment.
