Why was the American proletariat so resistant to socialism?
>>
>>2614740
Because they witnessed its failure in other countries and it brain drain effect, which often siphoned people to their country.
>>
>>2614740
Socialism loses its appeal when you live in an economically powerful democracy.
>>
>>2614740
Socialism didnt take on in any western democracy. A better question would be why American workers settled for a smaller welfare state than Europeans
>>
Because you could work some shitty labout job and still afford a house, large family, and a car

Because muh American dream

Ethnic divisions were far more important/prevalent than class divisions

All good answers tbqh. Socialism is popular during tough economic times, particuarly where there are high rates of unemployment. When a nation's econonomy is thriving, then people prefer what is working for them, in this is free market capitalism.
>>
Because the American mind is by its nature very hesitant (almost paranoid) when it comes to the government. That means that any large increases in federal power can only happen when times are tough and ithey are absolutely necessary, like the New Deal during the Great Depression, and even that got some pushback from people. It may also be because Americans are a very individualistic people, so the idea of Socialist conformity doesn't stick well. It could also be because Americans are not so fucking stupid as to give away their freedoms and power to a failed system running off of a failed ideology. Americanism and Socialism are just about polar opposites in every way possible.

>a country of fatties hate the world most successful weight loss program
golly gee
>>
Were they? What about the labor movement?
>>
>>2615165
the labor movement mainly just wanted to work within the capitalist system to improve working conditions and so on for working people. yeah there were socialists in the labor movement but their goals didn't really match the mainstream goals of the movement

Because anti-centralization sentiment is built into the foundation of American society both incidentally and intentionally.
>>
>you will never live in a world where the Confederacy wins independence and after a couple decades it's economy absolutely tanks and slaves and poor whites armed by northern operatives start a giant communist rebellion that leads to the complete collapse of civilization in the south allowing the Union to sweep in and reconquer it

Lol the North would have had a huge humanitarian crisis on it's hands every slave attempted to migrate North to ' The Promised Land' only to be received by an equally racist majority, lack of jobs and no franchisement in society.

The North would be mired in perfecting the life of the negro as the new national aim. Race riots normalised within 3 years and huge government crack downs within 5.

The South would suffer lack of manual labor thereby raising the price of Confederate exports. Until they opened their doors to European immigrants hungry for work.
>>
>>2614740
It was actually pretty popular until world war 2 and the Russians gave it a negative, anti-american connotation.

The Soviets destroyed all chances of any kind of Communist movement in the States.

>Because the American mind is by its nature very hesitant (almost paranoid) when it comes to the government.

As a American i think that the matter is more along the lines of fear that the other interest groups will be taking over that new organ of government influence made to carry out what ever new task is giving to the federal government. Keep in mind the biggest roll out of federal power was not the New Deal but rather the civil war. That frames the though on the matter around to "so what happens to the out group who loses influence?".

Added to this the policy that is put in place by either party has concessions to the other. If given a free hand to govern that would go away and much more harsh policy would be done.

USA had its own communist-esque movement that largely petered out by the time of the Civil War. America loves freedom too much for state enforced communism, but communism by free association with the commune did have a good run here.

They would build a living complex that included schools, libraries, homes, etc all centered around the factory or mill that the commune members worked at. This way they could both be equal with each other and still be economically viable. Generally they were "religious" in their nature, but this was religion of the very fashionable deist or unitarian variety, so they didn't believe in the core tenets of Christianity that man is imperfectable and were thus trying to create a utopia for him on earth.

Women were completely equal with men in these communes, they practiced communal marriage, as in everybody is married to everybody, and also raised children communally. This is what led to their downfall unfortunately, as they largely disbanded following scandals around this issue.

The capitalists and factory owners all heavily opposed it and the execution of those two Italian anarchists set a precedent. The Communist party of the US did gain power in the 30s but by the rise of the Soviets and the Cold War it was basically dismantled.

I remember watching a documentary filmed in the late 70s where an old man from the Bronx was talking about his time in the Spanish Civil War fighting for the republicans. As an offhand comment, he said that the biggest blow to communists in America was Stalin "betraying the revolution" and essentially scaring away everyone who'd have been a communist by that point.

That wasn't the main point of the documentary, but it was an interesting comment none the less.
