Well living and farming in Europe is nothing like starting a settler colony. Europe was dotted with villages and cities complete with infrastructure and trade routes. If you needed something you'd just buy it.

The Pilgrims going to America could not go to the proverbial walmart to get their supplies. Everything they needed they either had to take with them on their ship or produce/trade for locally. It's not like these people received training on how to establish a colony. They just packed their bags and took along what they believed they might need. If a harvest failed they could not just go over to the next village to buy grain nor could they import it from Poland.
