As much as I love Boas, that's not rpoof he was a good fighter. Most educated Germans from that time were fencer with similar scars. Collegiate fencing was a big deal at the time, and Germans had a crazy version of it. It basically involved two people facing each other and cutting away with sharp swords. The person with the most cuts won because it meant they were willing to take the most damage, and were therefore more honorable. Dueling scars were incredibly fashionable among the German elite because of that.

It's a myth.

Buddhist Monks doing martial arts descended from the sheer reality of living in the remote Chinese countryside: you police your own ass.

Due to the fact that the Imperial government cant disperse its soldiers far away from their garrisons in the cities to police the empire, it often left the job to other entities: most of the time, the civilians themselves. To that end, Chinese rural villagers owned weapons and drilled at some point in the year. To make sure village posses do legal actions, a judge dredd type official called a prefect oversees any posse action and at times commands them in anti-bandit operations. Anyone armed peasants arrested was brought to him for investigation, trial, and or imprisonment or execution.

Like villagers, monks of various religions in China owned weapons and defended themselves. Unlike villagers, all that free time between meditations meant these monks had shitloads of time for drills. If peasants can only afford, say, drilling in winter or past harvest season, Monks did it weekly. Daily possibly. Factor in the fact that Monks have extra incentive since their monasteries are places in very remote areas filled with money and food.

So what came down those mountains were people who are very good in fighting, to the point that they were paramilitary tier.

Similar arrangements existed for monasteries in Korea and Japan. In Japan it ratcheted up to 11 when Buddhism became a political force there and the Monasteries basically feudal holdings with its monks technically became part of the bushi warrior class.
