Old Roman style populism was fine.
Currently populism means to a political approach where you preach to masses with flavour of the month political discourse and use the support it gives you for other means.

With the exception of Sulla, every instance of the erosion of Republican tradition and legal political frameworks happened because of populists. Marius, Caesar, Clodius, Octavian, etc. While their ideas were valid, most populist were(and are) ambitious and lacked strict morals. Most successful populists and populist movements lead to a slow decline into authoritarianism
