No. Eventually his grandson would have a sicilian norman mother and would spend his life ruling from Sicily, but Freddy the first was german.
Why did he have an Italian surname?
His surname was actually Hohenstaufen. Brarbarossa (red beard) was just a nickname, the italian version of which is best known due to Freddy's claim to fame being getting destroyed by the italian city states.
