Why didn't Jefferson Davis just appoint Bragg as a military advisor from the start? It was obvious that Bragg wasn't fit to lead men into battle, but he was good at planning and organizing an army. It probably would have been better to leave Beauregard in command of the Army of Tennessee after Albert S. Johnston fell at Shiloh. Also, can we try and keep this thread strictly about the military aspect of the war and leave the who was right and who was wrong out of it?
From Grant's memoirs:
>"But Mr. Davis had an exalted opinion of his own military genius, and sought to 'kill two birds with one stone'. On several occasions during the war he came to the relief of the Union army by means of his SUPERIOR MILITARY GENIUS."
He actually did capitalize that, I didn't add it in.

Based Grant. Used capitalization to btfo of the South.

Grant was quite the sassy fellow. True Davis fucked up a lot, but there was a lot of bad material to work with in the Western Theater.

SUPERIOR MILITARY GENIUS deserves to be a /his/ meme

Agreed.
>SUPERIOR
>MILITARY
>GENIUS
Didn't nepotism have a lot to do with it?

Yes, Bragg and Davis were butt buddies. Bragg wanted to command the AoT in person and despite almost constant complaints from Bragg's corps and division commanders Davis always sided with Bragg.
