French tanks were just as good if not better as German tanks. Sure they had less then stellar tanks like the Renault R35 but they also had tanks like the Char B1 and SOMUA S35 which were just as good if not better then Germans tanks like the Panzer 3 and Panzer 4. Invading Ethiopia and really driving home the toothlessness of the League of Nations and, eventually, joining up with Hitler. Remember that Mussolini was a pretty popular figure, especially in the United States. Even in 1933 no less than FDR was singing his praises. If he'd done like Franco did and remained a non-belligerent he'd maybe be better remembered as I think fascism would still be viewed as a legitimate ideology that maybe would've grew or evolved over time.
