I read because of De Gaul wanting a more issolation policy for France. Wasn't there almost a coup because of this decision?
It was never going to work in the long run anyway. De Gaulle was smart enough to see that.

Charlie wanted full integration or bust. He saw that the current situation was hopeless and popular sentiment was changing in favour of getting rid of colonies.
The Legion wanted to perform a coup because of it and put Algeria (and maybe) France under military rule for a while. Algeria was the homebase for the Legion (who were a fair bit more hawkish than the regular French army) and had support lf the majority of the Pied Noirs (ethnic French people living in Algeria).
As the Pied Noirs were targeted by anti-colonial terrorism the French government started to withdraw more and more.
Consider it a psychological victory over a physical victory (like what happened in 'Nam; you can have the better KDR but still lose the war).

Demographics basically. Muslim population of Algieria was booming (and would continue to do so for decades). Pied Noirs were doomed to become an insignificant minority. France had to either give Muslims full rights (and hence enfranchise millions of them) or abandon the colony entirely.
