>It was created by the Congress to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system.
>The Federal Reserve was created on December 23, 1913, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act into law
Was Woodrow Wilson the goodest goy of all time?
The middle class in American came into being during the first half of the 20th century. Wealthier people earn more and buy more, leading to inflation as the economy grows and the Federal Reserve expands the money supply.

Can someone give me a quick rundown why the federal reserve is so hated and distrusted? Is it because it's semi private? Is it because it prints money? What are the alternatives to it?

Increases in aggregate demand. While there was a middle class prior to this time period, the 20th century saw the rise of mass consumerism in the United States. The monetary base increases matched population growth and suited demand.
This also doesn't accurately chart the Great Depression, in which the monetary base contracted by 1/3 according to Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz's analyses.
Now, as we see an increase race to the bottom with cheap labor in emerging markets reducing the costs of most goods in the CPI, deflation is a much bigger threat than hyperinflation.
Panic of 1893 was pretty shitty before. It's not like a high valued currency equals prosperity and, in the case of the Great Depression, it's actually pretty harmful.
