What was the best era and genre for art and why is it 20th century surrealism?
OP here, got an album of some Zdzislaw Beksinski paintings you should all check out. It'll make you appreciate art a lot more imo:

eh, surrealism has amazing exponents like Dali, Beksinski, Giger, Kush and so on, but it's an oniric form of expression and that kinda limits it because the artist has to be an interesting person instead of being very inspired and industrious. A lot of surrealist art ends up being floating objects and objects merging into the landscape, glorified optical illusions rather than powerful imagery. Dark surrealism is more consistently shocking which is why i adore Giger's hostile sexuality and the utter despair of Beksinski.

I agree with you, but that could be said for most or any genre I think. Leonardo Da Vinci for example had deep rooted religious inspiration and a variety of different patrons with just as different tastes and demands. That's why he stands out in Renaissance humanist art like Beksinski does with surrealism.
