I know right. They're very nice. Especially how all the colorized ones have a very soft almost dreaming feel to them. Hauntingly beautiful. The artist definitely found the right balance between Western elegance and low-key Japanese sensualness (without taking it completely over the top).

When Frenchmen arrived in Saint-Domingue, they often took mixed wives to better integrate in colonial society. Here's a lewd fact: shudō, or "way of the boys". Japan had a tradition of monastic and military pederast relationships. Basically young men would find a mentor a few years older who would teach how to be a good man, and once that young man turned into a man, he would do the same with another young man.
