What was life like on the borders of al-Andalus? Were people allowed to enter and leave freely?
>>
Protected borders are the modern invention.
>>
>>2568829
no
they had papers
>>
>>2568833
this

borders were a lot less defined amd generally based on the local count's loyalty. the borders of counties were based on individual villages and rivers.
>>
There was this area of the Frankish empire called "Hispanic March" witch was pretty much a heavily fortified region with special status within the empire. petty conflict between warring lords was common and often debastated areas were repopulated using some special colonization privileges, such as no taxation at all, to encourage people to live in such an unstable enviorment
>>
>>2570879
>no taxation
But were they represented and were their roads?
>>
>>2568829
>What was life like on the borders of al-Andalus?
Constant skirmishes specially in Castille in which you could claim all the land that ypu conquered as yours without royal authority
>Were people allowed to enter and leave freely?
Kind of.Christians and jews fleed massively to the north when the Almoravids banned the practice of judaism and christianity in their lands.
>>
>>2570956
so the north got cucked anyway? my galizian nazi friend sais the muslims never got to the north.
>>
>>2570981
Most christians were native iberians but most jews came with the Ayyrabs.Your nazi friend is a retard as the kings of Castile spreeded the moriscos through all Spain so they would never be strong enough to rebel.Galicia has the highest NA admixture in Spain.More than places like Granada
>>
>>2571024
How much did the iberians intermix with the visigoths when they arrived, then how much did the visigoths interbreed with the ummayyads, then how much did these Christians intermix with the reconquista knights, and who exactly were the reconquista knights. Refugees who came home? Or Frankish people wanting their own land?
>>
>>2571593
Visigoths contributed very little to the Iberian genepool.
>>
>>2571615
So before Frankish settlers move in, what would the Christians culture be, Basque?
>>
>>2571622
Ibero-roman in most of the peninsula and basque in navarra and the basque country
>>
>>2571622
Besides frankish settlers did not move in, most lands were settled by christians born in the spanish christian kingdoms, or christan refugees from cordoba. The only place with franks was the march, which was pretty small
>>
>>2571649
>born in the Christian Spanish kingdoms
But who popualated those, just Romo-Iberian refugees.
Does anyone else find Iberian and Prussian history really confusing
>>
>>2571593
>How much did the iberians intermix with the visigoths
Mostly the elite
>visigoths interbreed with the ummayyads
The nobility that converted a lot. The christians ones fled to the north. Abderraman the III was a second cousin to king of Leon for example
>how much did these Christians intermix with the reconquista knights
Almost nothing
>and who exactly were the reconquista knights.
Mostly villian knights(peasants with their own equipments and horses) and warrior monks
>Refugees who came home?
Some
> Or Frankish people wanting their own land?
Very few. Frankish influence was just strong in the hispanic march. The kingdom of Pamplona cutted their expansion in the western part of the peninsula
>>
>>2571677
>just Romo-Iberian refugees.
Those are the refugees. The north was inhabited by Cantabros (future Castillians), Astures (future Asturians and Leonese),Galicians (future Galicians and Portuguese) and Basques (future Basques and Aragonese)
>>
Good thread, but I'm hijacking it for a good answer to current Iberias' genetics. What were the aboriginal inhabitants before the great migrations and the Visigoths and whatnot? Were the Reconquista duchies ethnically iberian? Were the Tartessians a unique 'race'?
>>
>>2572054
im no expert but im pretty sure the people near the Mediterranean share the same haplo group as other Mediterraneans (westerns at least, maybe greeks too before turk butt rape) and the northern shared the group as the celts

Not gonna derail the thread but greek admixture remains almost exactly the same, the Ottomans held a very gentle hand over their conquered territories. Modern turks west of Ankara arn't even ethnically Turkish, they're Turkified. Same with Kurds and Armenians.
>>
>>2572090
>gentle hand
>what are janissaries and revolution
>what is the Armenian genocide beta
>>
>>2572105
>>what are janissaries and revolution
Compare the Devshirme to the French and English way, where English & French are now the majority languages in several former colonies, to blood tax. 'Sides, it did not dilute the ethnicity of the villages in question.

>>2572105
>>what is the Armenian genocide beta
The sick man of Europe trying very hard to remain relevant.
>>
>>2572090
>very gentle hand over their conquered territories

with the size of the Ottoman slave trade I don't really think you could claim that
>>
>>2572193
The slave markets were private corporations though, only the Devshirme was state financed.
>>
>>2572054
Iberians+celts+romans. Iberians were heavily mixed woth Phoenicians and greeks and that is why Catalans are the swarthiest people in Spain despite being under moorish rule for 50 years
>>
>>2572090
Modern Turks east of Ankara aren't Turkic either, it's where Armenians lived and now Kurds live.
>>
>>2568829
>Were people allowed to enter and leave freely?
yes but 95% of the population were commoners tied to the land and under the heel of whatever warlord ruled in that area, some might only leave their place of birth once in their life to go on pilgrimage
>>
>>2572123
>blood tax is better than people rabidly socially evolving
Ya what m8
