Why were the Axis such terrible allies to each other?

>Hitler fucked Mussolini over by declaring war earlier than agreed
>Japan didn't invade the USSR when they were supposed to
>Italy betrayed Germany later
>>
Because they were the outcasts and allied each other because nobody else would ally with them like North Korea today.
>>
Italy needed like 10 years to actually be worth something, Germany was ready then. Capitalists can't wait, their greed and impulsiveness forced them.

Japan steamrolled Russia last time. They were too busy following in Britain's steps and playing empire in East and South East Asia, complete with their monarch as head of the state religion too.

Italy wasn't even a united country, its still not a united country.

> Japan steamrolled Russia last time.
You mean Japan was steamrolled by Russia and forced to sign neutrality pact in April 1941.

>You mean Japan was steamrolled by Russia
If Japan was steamrolled, Russia would have taken land. After the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, things hadn't changed at all.

Because the japanese offensive had been crushed and Stalin wanted to focus on Europe. Why continue the campaign when your territory is intact and the enemy's leaders don't want to continue fighting?

You don't need land taken from you to have had your ass kicked.

>Italy betrayed Germany later
The government was overthrown and Mussolini captured and then killed. I really don't get it, why should have the Partisans carried on with the decisions that a government they openly opposed and fought took?
>Yeah, we just killed Mussolini and liberated Italy from fascism but we'll keep helping the Nazis because you know how these things go

It makes no fucking sense

The Axis are notoriously known for their nonexistent Grand Strategy. The Axis weren't so much an alliance with a common concrete goal in mind as they were just three expanding empires with common enemies.

As for Italy's unpreparedness for war, Mussolini believed the war in the Europe was nearly over when he joined in June of 1940, wanting to get a stake in Southern France before the country collapsed and take Savoy, Nice, and Corsica. With Britain hanging on the ropes and the USSR not in the picture yet, most people had every reason to believe the war in Europe was all but over.

I don't know Mussolini's reaction to Barbarossa once Hitler announced that it was in the works, but it definitely wasn't in Italian interests to go to war with a military titan like the Soviet Union.

Japan not invading the USSR in tandem with Barbarossa was mostly because Hitler never announced Barbarossa to the Japanese, the invasion took Tojo by surprise just as it did everyone else.

But with Japan's army already tied up fighting China and having fresh memories of the Soviet victory at Khalkin Gol, Japan backed off of attempting to expand north for the European colonies in SouthEast Asia, seen as easier targets that the Navy could seize, as the Army already had their hands full.

Also I never understood why Italy's withdraw from the war was seen as a betrayal. King Emmanuel III regained power and overthrew Mussolini's government, prompting a German invasion of Italy where the new Italian government was forced to fight the Social Republic that Germany set up in the North.

Going into more detail on that, the new Italian government's hopes were to withdraw from the war and be a neutral party for the remainder of the conflict, but the ceasefire agreement contained conditions that if Italy was invaded by Germany in response to the withdraw, then the Allies had to come to Italy's defense, which is what happened.
