Most of the deaths in the Soviet Union were during a 20 year period from after the revolution to the mid-30's (same for China, but from the 40's to the 60's). Also most of those deaths were due to shitty implementation of policy, not deliberate murder, it was still in the millions, but still a minority of total deaths.

which is why I'm always skeptic of the whole "communist atrocities" is it really because communism fails or because of the inherent shittiness of the country. With the Nazis they took Germany, a perfectly good first world country and made it kill millions inside and out. As for Russians your life was pretty much shit before, during, and after communism.

Don't forget policy being shitty on paper even before implementation, as a result of weakening data feedback from the shop floor to the central committee and the politburo, and policies (especially on the matter of wages) that further made it impossible for accurate reporting of data to occur even if it were possible for lower management to actually speak to higher management.
