Actually you can see the garrison numbers drop in half due to starvation, desertion, disease, raids by cossacks, and just the population killing any soldier they see going to the bush to piss alone.
Everywhere Napoleon left X number of people to hold a town, he'd find X/2 when he came back to collect them, of that.

But this is wrong. If we exclude the germanic deserters (who "returned", as in ran away), only 10000 returned, and of those only 1000 were fit for service.
We know this because only soldiers who returned were paid.
