Because the combined power of Europe basically ruled the world at that time, Euros ultimately felt that it was time they figured out which Euro was the best (goes into Europe's persistent inability to embody themselves under one state). Combine this with competing imperial interests, nationalism, alliances, etc. and you have a world changing event like ww1. ww2 was just a response to ww1's outcome, at least in Europe.

tldr: yeah it was meant to destroy europe and kill europeans, it was just also instigated by other europeans. A bit like a 'european civil war' of sorts.
