Marx adhered to Smith and classical economics though. It's modern economics that departed from Smith. Smith hated landlords as unproductive parasitic leeches that got income solely due to ownership like Marx hated capitalists. Smith was also in favor of policy that aided the worker. He just thought that mercantilism and tariffs for anything but fledgling industries was not the way to do it. Smith wrote in favor of markets, not in favor of capitalism.
