Call of Duty and Medal of Honor got an entire generation interested in WW2 history. Entertainment is a gateway to historical interest. There is no doubt in my mind that kids will play that game and get interested in the time and start reading about WW1

Saving Private Ryan came out which was a huge hit, so everyone started making WW2 media. Then those games came out in the late 90s/early 2000s and got a bunch of people interested in the history of it through a purely "this game looks fun" mindset.
