Why was the concept of Nationalism ever embraced? It's so flawed and it uses some aspects of Romanticism to justify the principles behind it, while also completely disregarding some Romantic principles. Is Nationalism an "Ism" of "make rules up as you go along"? Or is it just an excuse for exclusivity and/or racism? Or am I missing the point entirely?

Well it can be a quite useful tool for power hungry leaders to include more people into their dominion.

Nationalism was originally a liberal ideology that wanted to (((free))) the nations from ancient multiethnic Christian monarchies and organize states on ethnic principles, it got adopted by conservatives only a long time after that.

The cause of WW1 was imperialism, actually. Don't fall for the meme that it was caused by one dumb Serb, that was just an excuse.
Utilises itself as a mobilising ideology to centralised industrialisation

African colonization actually, the Brits wanted to build a railroad from Cape to Cairo and a bunch of German colonies were cucking them out of accomplishing it, plus Germany being the rising power threatened British and French dominance over Africa. Then there was the Russians who thought that after getting involved in a war in the Balkans they could end up with grabbing Constantinople for themselves and controlling the Bosporus. If this wasn't a factor then WW1 wouldn't be a thing and it would be just a dime a dozen regional conflict between Austria and Serbia.

>Why was the concept of Nationalism ever embraced?
Because the entities that embraced it were more powerful than the ones that didn't.

I'd say our national-romanticism in Norway played a huge part in us becoming a sovereign nation from under the swedes.

what about post Revolution US? Civil War and Articles of Confederation aside, the US became pretty strong without a need for strong Nationalism
