I had an argument with some people about the recent event that saw the australian barrier reef almost entirely dead. They said things like "humanity is disgustin we are destroying the world" etc. I took the bait and told them that its not important since we are not australians and this event will never touch us at any point in human history. They obviously started to offend me telling me I was stupid and it was for people like me that the world was going shit. So /his/ is it really that important even if it will not touch humanity/change our way of living? I think they were overeacting but still do we have a "moral law" to protect the nature from being destroyed even if it is not in our interests?

If you're living in a first world country then your most likely helping renovate the world to become more environmentally friendly. It's the Chinese and Indians who are literally over sized cancer blobs that are destroying the world.
So tell your friends there that they need to address their (China/India) crimes and if they don't then they're just hypocritical and just like to bitch and moan.

A lot of people have the knowlege to understand the argument but not the knowledge to communicate the argument. And you are hard pressed to find somebody that knows what's going on that wouldn't be infuriated by the idiotic comments you made. Preserving the environment is a good thing but they are just using it as an excuse to mouth off at everyone for a sense of catharsis. The thought process behind pic related was probably "dude, I'm 1/16 navajo and the nazca lines are like ethnic and mysterious and shit, let's make our own message in the ground next to it about our favorite meme because we are such special snowflakes like the people who made them".
