What would you guys recommend me doing to get information on deceased vets and how should I research them? in a way that wont cost money from a stupid internet site.

Is it family? Your family might have some records - discharge papers usually had a decent amount of info.
Your best bet is probably filing a request with the government, although it might cost a couple bucks, it would be official info.

National Archives are a good start. Unfortunately there was a fire there in the 70's or something and a lot of vet records were destroyed.

Did he mention his unit at all in any form of publication? some sites can help with finding your relative.
I do this all the time when I research Soviet Memoirs and soldiers.
