What can /his/ tell me about Salazar
>Was he actually a fascist and if so how did he compare to other fascist like Mussolini
>How was his rule in Portugal and what was Portugal like under him
>Was he a good leader, how oppressive was he
>Why did he love 'tradition' so much
>>
>>2535357
He was a bit of a bastard to Angola
>>
>>2535357
Bump for interest.

What were his relations with Franco like? Did he ever consider joining the Axis in the Second World War?
>>
>>2535357
I've always found the stories surrounding his last years funny. The Portuguese had basically had enough of the episode but, instead of bringing the old man to court to answer for his crimes, they let him stay in bed and brought him random bits of paper to sign - letting him believe he was still in charge right up to the last.
>>
>>2535859
what crimes?
>>
well, Salazar wasn´t a revolutionary fascist.
But their regime, had facist bases, corporativism, nationalism, para-military milicias all that stuff. He had good relations with other fasci in Europa, helped Franco won the spanish civil war, portuguese volunteers were 20.000 called Viriatos, some of them even fought for the axis in wwii in the eastern front with the blue division. But Portugal was neutral in the wwii due alliance with Uk
There was for sure opression, no free elections just like in other euro regimes of that time and also political prisions. The economy was somehow good, small public deficit and no debt etc. but it was also poor in comparision with Uk or Denmark. Education made some improvments. In the 60's they entered in a colonial war, Portugal against the independist movements of their colonies in africa angola, moçambique, and guine supported by Urss and Usa. till 1974 when a coup endend the Estado Novo and restored democracy. That coup (called revolução dos cravos) influenced Spain and Franco's regime also fell.
hope ive helped

He was obsessed with getting rid of commies and ridding Portugal of Soviet influence.
>>
>>2537030
Being a nationalist, a fascist, keeping Portugal from becoming part of the USSR, trying to keep the Portuguese colonies from being left to the wayside to rot like the Anglo/French ones.
>>
>>2538961
since when are those crimes?

He wasn't a bloodthirsty tyrant of the type that killed thousands of oppositors, but economy and society under him stagnated to a point Portugal still lags behind the rest of Western Europe.
>>
>>2538968
>but economy and society under him stagnated
please shut the fuck up, this is false.
>>
Based, fought to the end for his nation supremacy and independence.
>>2538968

Kill yourself. Those are not crimes. Those are the deeds of a hero.

Under his watch the country saw true growth and progress in a way that never happened with the previous (and succeeding) republics. He avoided needless war, something the republican governments couldnt resist, he defended the empire, and its legacy, and made Portugal a relevant force on the map once more.

He was a great, serious, down-to-earth leader who cared for no distractions.
Oppressiveness is exaggerated. Especially when compared to the rest of Europe (mostly media control). It was seen as needed to put an end to all the confusion, as Portugal was a hive of "revolutions" and "ideals" before he came to power.

Tradition was the rallying point of his ideology. God, Fatherland, People. The cornerstones of this great Empire.

About the society and education agree in some aspects, cause today Portugal is much better, and scores in education, Pisa results, above the Ocde average in everything.
In regards to economy not sure.

>Being nationalist is a crime

What do you know? My grandfather migrated from Portugal to Brazil because there was nothing there, many relatives live in France, Luxembourg, they all left Portugal during Salazar years because the economy was so bad.
>>
>>2539080
Lol he dumped money into the fucking colonies. What was he thinking?
>>
>>2538965
>trying to keep the Portuguese colonies from being left to the wayside to rot like the Anglo/French ones.
It sounds like he supports Salazar and isn't accusing him of crimes
