They were a people who flourished all over Europe from 3000 BC up until the expansion of the Roman Empire. Most of the continental languages are dead. Today "authentic Celts" only survive in small numbers in the British Isles and northern France.

A previous linguistic group who lost their languages, and now speak a mix of their own mixed heavily with Latin and Germanic. Genetically though they still cover Western Europe (note that Celts were not a single genetic group, what i mean is that the particular Celtic inhabitants are still present in their respective areas)

Some linguists believe that its root word, "keltoi" means "the tall ones"

This(although the celtic languages are still in the same linguistic group technically), the assorted occupations didn't do much to change/displace the peasant class.
The nature of earlier(pre-iron age) european migrations appears to be fundamentally different because the groups like the celts(and indo-europeans in general) actually get in there and mix it up genetically with people in every little village and tribe. Similar to how modern latin america took shape.
Post-iron age western europe the focus is almost strictly big cities. Rome, the germanic tribes and the muslims all leave some traces of course, but they were looking to rule the people who were there and influence them culturally, not replace them genetically.
