The Pope was right when he said it's better to be an atheist than an non-devout Catholic.
Look at Jordan Peterson. He's most likely an atheist but he believes the teachings of Christianity to be absolutely true as a prescription of how to live a virtuous life righteously. From how he talks about science and evolution, he obviously doesn't believe the mysticism of the Bible to be empirically true but he absolutely believes the teachings of the archetype of Jesus are a map of the absolute right way to live life. And he authentically, in good faith, acts out this belief in his everyday life.
Compare that to the average Christian. Most are Christian out of fear and hedonism. They fear hell and they desire heaven. Not because they wish to not do harm and to do right and to be in align with God. But because they want a hedonistic pleasure they think heaven offers and to avoid being tortured in hell. Their motivations are almost entirely of carnal self-interest with no conception of a higher good than themselves. Look at what these people pray to receive. To win a sports game, to get a raise, etc etc. It's always physical, material desires that they pray for. They completely misunderstand Christianity to the point of absolute heresy where they have completely subverted it to be indistinguishable from Satanism.

The thing is... That the Christian bible actually predicted it.
It conveyed in a way that out of the followers of Christ, only a few actually do follow him...
Because most people, indeed, look for their own self interest... They follow things because they see that that's the norm, therefor, they do it in order to "Get in".
The easiest way to keep people in, is to have a reward and punishment system...
Which is commonly found in cults and any other place that offers something, but also, expects something in return...
Christianity is just another institution...
On some cases, it does manage to hold communities, and actually unite people.
On others, it's just an easy cash grab opportunity.
Anyhow, culture outweigh religion... That is why you end up with Christians highly focused on physical gain, rather than spiritual connection...
Ultimately, everything boils down to reality...
And in reality, humans are still just another form of animal... They want rewards, they want pleasures, they want social connections, and they want MORE.
Hence why Christianity, ends up allowing those things to happen, while trying to restrict much more profane behaviors, which as of late, it seems like people don't really care much about it...
Kinda like "sin now, repent afterwards, sin again... Repeat".
They invented an easy way out of sinning... So, people abuse it.
You can never have any true religion, because when applied by the masses, the masses never grasp what it truly means...
They just wanna get the most reward out of it.
Why ells would people have given up their ancient religions in the first place?
Because the Christian god offered much more than gods that only showed merciless actions, gave allot of punishment, and appeared like they didn't gave a crap about anything mortal-like.
It appeared as if the new god was the better deal...
Atheism, is just not seeing any deal, only observing that the dealer keeps being a human with words of the beyond.

Well to be self critical, if you'll allow me to indulge. Might I note that the history part of this good board indeed has too many ww2 threads and /int/ tier threads comparing and contrasting in quite a rude level I might add history of certain countries and continents, notwithstanding the overt generalizations and racist undertones which inhibit proper discourse.
