Why are the Vikings not considered terrorists?

A terrorist is someone who uses terror (fear) as a means of submitting others to their agenda. Vikings just appeared and took shit. Although the modern interpretation of terrorist is someone I don't like with a gun, so...

But no, they weren't terrorists, they were bandits and raiders. Unlike modern Islamic terrorists, they didn't give a shit about "defending their culture", they just wanted some easy lewt.

It is true, however, the definition of "terrorist" has been stretched far too much. In the past it generally described a non-governmental entity that spread fear among civilians in an effort to create political change (other than "let's get rich fast"). Usually in defense of, yes culture, or national sovereignty, recognition of rights, and the like.

Vikings just killed everyone and took their stuff, they didn't leave manifestos behind or crucify anyone or such to make any sort of point, save maybe in the same fashion pirates did - killing anyone who put up any resistance particularly brutally. So, really, just smash and grab with a longboat for a getaway car.
