It's 1848 and you're an East Coast dockworker in his early 20's. No wife yet, no kids. You're bored and have a pretty good stake saved up.
Suddenly, word of gold just lying in the rivers of California erupts across the nation. Men made rich overnight.
Do you join the rush? Or do you remain on the East Coast where it's safe?

Go west and sell shit to the people who are rushing. That's where the real money is.
Seems worth a shot, all things considering. A modern day analog is that apparently there's a lot of money to be made in Africa as a long haul trucker if you have the balls for it. I'd totally do that if I didn't suffer from crippling autism.
I WOULD HAVE JOINED THE "RUSH".

What would you bring to sell?
Join the rush, and then after a drunken night at the pub, end up on a merchant ship headed towards China to trade for tea because the captain resorted to hiring criminals to kidnap impaired men and doctor fake work contracts for slave wages in order to fill save money and fill the positions left open by sailors that ditched the dying industry to find gold.

Whatevers is demand. Land, tools, food, women.
It is ironic that while the north was determined from the beginning to oppose all territorial gains from what was the south's war against Mexico with the No Territory movement, that same territory brought about the gold rush that ended the chronic shortage of capital that had held the north behind the south economically since the country was founded.
Also it is interesting that the gold was discovered by exiled Mormons the same day the land was officially surrendered to the US, destroying their dreams of an isolated kingdom in the wilderness.
