Pretty sure my dad is a war criminal. He left in 1993, came to Australia, immediately married and had me.

From what I've managed to discern so far, he was a butcher, then a mechanic and mentions working on military vehicles, so I presume he served in the YNA/JNA. He's also experienced with firearms and suffers symptoms of PTSD.

He absolutely refuses to discuss his life from 1988 - 1993 and has only let me meet select family members who've been very quiet about the period. A number of times I've seen evidence that he could claim a great deal of money if he ever returned, and have seen his sister go from poverty to buying a near $1 million home after going back to Croatia. He also keeps his paperwork and identity documents sealed behind 2 key locks and combination.

It could all be coincidence, but it seems highly suspect.

Yugoslavia wasn't like the rest of the eastern block. They had markets, and was actually a fairly nice place to live.

There was ethnic conflicts between from the beginning, the country was artificial first created as a monarchy and than under socialist rule of Tito who was popular enough with everyone that things ran peacefully, once he was gone there was nothing holding them together.

How do you explain Serbian Muslims though? There were much less of them so they were driven out/massacred after the Ottomans lost the Balkans. Why were they distinct? Why are there so many more Muslims in Bosnia than closer to Turkey and in areas ruled longer by the Turks? Why was half of Bosnia Catholic before the Serbs? Why did the Christian kings of Bosnia who also called themselves "king of the Serbs" not use king of the Serbs as their first title?

Serbs and Bulgars mostly. Not big massacres, you understand, but many Muslim families left Europe for Turkey after the Ottomans left, but had to pass through Orthodox land on the way. On the way it would be very easy for people to see who they were and form a posse, or else for brigands to attack with impunity. This happened apparently to my grandfather's grandfather, on the way to Turkey with his family when they were robbed. They survived but had to return to Bosnia. I'm not calling it concerted violence at all, but it just happened, centuries of anger at being cucked (literally) taken out on innocents. But that happens everywhere.

The Bosnian language is a purely political endeavor. It's a completely mutually intelligible language.
As opposed to Croatian. Serbian and Croatian were similar and have become even more similar during the past century but they're two languages. Stokavian Croatian is closer to Serbian than other dialects.

His family lived in fucking Belgrade until they moved to Bosnia in 1861 because of what i said, because they were unwanted. This is coming from Serbs and Croats in general though, didn't know any Bosniks to talk to. One of the guys mentioned he remembers having to run to air raid shelters periodically when he was 8 or so, most were just drills however.

The most fucked thing about the Yugoslav wars is that people will admit Serbian and Croatian elites reached an understanding behind closed doors while your average Croat Serb or Bosniak was dying and AT THE SAME TIME admitting that the dissolution of Yugoslavia into ethnostates was still probably worth it in the long run.
