The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a hold on most of those territories so that helped. Although it's pretty amazing how they managed to wrest control of the Indian Ocean from the Ottomans whose navy was much more well established in that part of the world. Some times they sieged coastal cities with their ship's cannons, a tactic that a lot of native asian populations had no effective way to counter at that time. Some other times they went about it diplomatically (e.g. getting approval from MBanza Kongo to establish forts in what would later be Angola; China's offering of Macao to the Portuguese) so all in all I'd say ot was partly because of their superior military technology and partly because of plain old political craftiness

They basically invented cannon line naval fighting and for 50-60 years were basically unbeatable to the point of it becoming hilarious to read.

There are at least a dozen instances where a single Portuguese big ship fought an entire navy of a faction and won.

Hell, the Mamluks lost basically all their navy to them and then the Ottomans suffered the same.

They even sent Piri Reis on them only for him to be BTFO'd by some random captain with a couple ships.

How can you say Jewish people were not a net positive in countries such as Portugal and Spain, atleast for some time?
