"The famous British scientist, Mikhail al-Farad - anglicized Michael Faraday - might have been a black Muslim, according to revealing new research. Al-Farad flourished during the Islamic Golden Age, making lasting contributions to the fields of experimental physics and electromagnetism. Victorian Era scientists, however, altered his name and date of birth to a far more recent date, reflecting the backward state of science in Britain with relation to the Muslim world. Notwithstanding, an earlier version of his name is preserved in textbooks as the unit of measurement of capacitance - the farad -, attesting, beyond the shadow of a doubt, a black and Muslim pedigree. Now whether Mikhail al-Farad was descendant from the black Phoenician settlers that colonized Britain in ancient times, or from black moors coming to England from Spain, it is not yet entirely clear. One thing is clear though. This finding will change the way that science is known by the public, from an Eurocentric view, to a more diverse view, as well as bring to the fore a discussion of how systematic racism, with its restrictive policies such as ceilings for affirmative action and government and private scholarships, have curbed the potential of minorities and people of color in western countries - and how we need to change this."
