Modern medicne. Not to say thet there weren't dumb older people in the olden days but you had to be doing somthing right if you reached 60 before the 19th centry. Nowadys people can be over 600 pounds and reach middle age before their heart gives up, and even they they can just get a new one.

One has to have the basic necessary intelligence to be wise and then just improve on that through the years. Most people don't have that base, they just get old but remain average or dumb, plus dementia on top.
