I think he means more in that he was an asocial loner who maintained a sharply critical stance on society.

What he misses is that Nietzsche wasn't strictly contrarian, and could see the merit of many of the ideas he criticized. He was also a highly dedicated writer and proficient poet. Further his aim wasn't to just tear down, but to tear down so that something better could be built in its place.
