>This unique event pitted musketeers, pikemen and Spanish rodeleros against mostly Japanese and Chinese merchants (both legitimate and smugglers), fishermen, rōnin, and soldiers

Yeah, real cream of the crop of the japanese military.

>cream of the crop of the japanese military
And a bunch of explorers in the Philippines is the cream of the crop of the Spanish army? In fact it is even more pathetic that a bunch of under suplied explorers BTFO professional warriors
>>
>>2505908
Yeah, its a poorly cited article about a battle taht was mostly won by cannons.

that and an anon pointed out that a thousand people in 18 sampan doesn't make sense.
>>
>>2506121

I wouldn't call any of them professional soldiers. the Ronins, however, are pretty valid.

>>2506053
Not Spanish, but 40 Portuguese sailors fought against 3000 samurai. they lost but not before they managed to kill hundreds of samurai, and you can't say it was because of cannons as the Japanese had several ships and hundreds of musketeers.

well you can, because Japanese ships at the time had a few cannons if any, were not build for them, where as the Portuguese ship had many.

Its also worth pointing out Japanese ships sucked so that was in the Europeans favor as well.

"Between 8 and 9 o'clock at night the flotilla closed in at the carrack's stern, where only one of the two chase guns could be used to fend off the attack since the other had been moved to the prow to protect the ship's cables. A Japanese Christian captain led the charge, rallying his fellow coreligionists with the reasoning that if the carrack was not destroyed or captured, Ieyasu would turn his wrath onto the Christian community and the churches would be destroyed.[4] A few Japanese succeeded in boarding the ship but were promptly cut down (Pessoa himself apparently killed two) or were forced to jump into the water.[1]"

The Portuguese couldn't really use most of their cannons during the final battle where the 3000 samurai started appearing. it ended up being a battle between the 500 musketeers/archers against the 40 sailors with some of the Japanese trying to board the ship, and they still managed to held on for 6 hours.

I'm not saying its not an impressive fight, but overall the Portuguese had the advantage of a much better ship and were much better armed in terms of firepower.

Essentially it was like a castle assault on the water. with the Portuguese raining down firepower on men trying to climb up and engaging in melee with the few who succeeded.

>that anon was completely retarded because it was a SERIES of engagements.
No,the wiki article reads like fanfiction because the author isn't able to critically analyze his sources.

>The Japanese put out grappling-irons and poured two hundred men aboard the galley, armed with pikes and breastplates. There remained sixty arquebusiers firing at our men.
The Spanish were notorious for fudging numbers, the largest Japanese ship of that time only had a crew of 60 marines and 80 sailors.

Furthermore, the Spanish were only barely able to repel the Japanese vessel with two of their own ships.

>Set the whole fleet to return, because there are a thousand Japanese on the river with a great deal of artillery, and we are few
The Spanish claimed the entire Japanese fleet was made up of 1,000 men,not that the Japanese fleet engaged in battle with all 11 ships.

>They said that the Japanese were attacking them with eighteen champans, which are like skiffs. They were defending themselves well although there were but sixty soldiers with the seamen, and there were a thousand of the enemy, of a race at once valorous and skilful.
The Indian crew claimed that 1,000 men attacked the frigate with 18 sampans(180 men maximum) not the entire fleet.

>These enemies, who have in truth remained here, are a warlike people; and if your Excellency do not provide by this ship, and reenforce us with a thousand soldiers, these islands can be of little value.
Juan Baptista Roman proceeds to ask for reinforcements,if one Spanish frigate can repel 1,000 Japanese pirates why would there be a need for reinforcements?

There's no evidence they were ronins.

Meant to say one ship not two.

The entire passage is a summary of two inconclusive naval engagements.
>>
>>2508396
The Japanese attacked the ship at a direction that
made the Portuguese only able to use two of their cannons.

The Japanese also had 500 musketeers/archers, if anything, they had the superior firepower.

It was the sailors trying to fend off samurais attempting to board while their musketeers/archers were providing cover fire, not anything like a bunch of sword wielding jackasses trying to climb up while the enemy were picking them off.

the Portuguese did have hand grenades, though.
