When did your deep admiration for East Asian societies come to an end?
In my case, that happened when I read about the concept of "wealth in things" in Eurasian societies vs "wealth in people" or "wealth in knowledge" in African societies, realized that the accelerated technological development of Eurasian societies based on "wealth in things" and the extremely high inequality and destruction of the environment it engenders was the root cause of most of Earth's problems, and realized that East Asian societies were the paradigm of highly hierarchical societies focused mostly on hoarding goods.

When I was 18, I used to be really into Japanese stuff, I even learned how to use chopsticks because I liked sushi and Panda Express (yeah I know that's Chinese). I'd also been to Japan a few times but after a while you realize that Japan is totally fucked as a society and culture. It's disturbing to see how much Japan tries to be polite and cutesy even though you know deep down they're capable of doing some sick ass shit. I'll still watch anime from time to time just not as much anymore.
