The Phoenicians (particularly the Carthaginians) are described as a mercantile society where social mobility was achieved through successful commerce, in stark contrast to the military ethos of the Romans and Greeks. Is it a coincidence that their closest levantine neighbors went into the same profession despite biblical sources giving the impression of a warrior society and pre-diaspora Israel and Judah not interacting with foreign countries very much?
