Serbo-Croatian was standardized in the 19th century and gradually forced on everyone to the point where all of the old micro dialects and the Latin based Dalmatian language died out, there was literally no reason no to unify. SFRJ fell apart because the USSR collapsed and people wanted to settle scores rooted in Croatian fascist brutalities of WWII which in turn were rooted in abuses by Serbian crown during kingdom of Yugoslavia. The idea that Croats Serbs and Bosnians are ancient blood enemies is a dumb meme.
