Could the Schism have been mended had Aquinas not fallen ill and died on his way to the Second Council of Lyon?

Looking to find a way to reunite the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, Pope Gregory X convened the Second Council of Lyon to be held on 1 May 1274 and summoned Thomas to attend.[60] At the meeting, Thomas's work for Pope Urban IV concerning the Greeks, Contra errores graecorum, was to be presented.[61]

For love of Thee have I studied and kept vigil, toiled, preached and taught...."[63] He died on 7 March 1274[62] while giving commentary on the Song of Songs.[64]

Do you really, really think anyone gave a shit about theology and philosophy? The schism was a matter of power and nothing else. Unless Thomas was bringing a huge army or maybe tons of gold to back his attempts to convince the Greeks, then no.

The reason they have a beef with it is because they make Palamism suspect. This is evident from how they censured Orthodox Thomists (later Catholics) of their own.

Aquinas didn't exactly leave the Catholic Church, if anything he got into Catholic mysticism latter in life,stuff that is from the protestant point of view, fair worse than mixing Christianity with Aristotle
