I first thought about posting this on /lit/ but since they recommend me not to do so, i'm counting on you guys : i'm curently studying buddhism, and while I manage to gatter enough information among secondary and general books, I would like to read the Tripitaka (or tipitaka if you prefer).
For those of you who don't know, the Tripitaka (Three Basket ? I dont know how to translate it in english) is the closest thing to a bible, a canonical compilation of essential writting in the budhist religion (or way of life, philosophy, whatever you prefer). The problem is that it's FUCKING expensive, and I'm not even mentionning the different versions.
My request is the following : did any of you ever read online a numeric english version of the tripitaka OR a decent summary, still in english, and if so, can you send me the link ?
Thak you very much for your attention, cheers

Tripitaka means "Three Baskets", also known as Pali canon.
It includes three different typics of literature. Buddha's sayings. Philosophy/Metaphysics/interpetations of Buddha. Monkhood livelihood.

My point is that Buddhists have been destroyed so badly in debate by Hindus that only 0.7% of the population of India still practices the faith. The only reason that it still exists in other parts of the world is because Hinduism doesn't exist along with it in these areas. You're wasting your time studying Buddhism when you could be studying Hinduism in my opinion. Yes, any spiritual path is going to lead you in the right direction but Hinduism will lead you there faster and will guide you better.

>Buddhist population is low because they have been "destroyed so badly in debate by Hindus"
>Not because of Muslim invasions combined with the comparatively insular nature of Buddhist institutions which kept them mostly alienated form the population

Hinduism survived the Muslims. Buddhism wasn't always insular. Obviously there are multiple reasons why Buddhism isn't as popular. A significant one is that it didn't stand its own in debate. You accept this rationale for Western philosophy, why not Eastern? What's the reason why there are so few ethical relativists in academia?
