Yeah, I remember having our car break down on 6th and Alameda just before the riots. Finding the only law enforcement came in the form of the local drug lord - who was kind enough to take us in and watch over us while our car was fixed. We were young and stupid enough to drive up there during the riots, hoping to see something - then realized we were stupid white boys as soon as we heard the first spray of gunfire and turned around. My favorite experience in NYC being a huge black guy coming up to me on the Subway, holding his bleeding back in pain, and saying "Damn, I got stabbed, again." entirely nonchalantly. That was literally my New York welcome.
