During Bathory reforms (second half od 16thC) number of pikemen in Polish army was greatly reduced. During rule of Vasa(beggining of 17thC) pikemen were to be disbanded entirely, as they were considered obsolete. At that time rest of Europe was still.

Hm... I expressed that poorly. I was more about army composition. Pike&shot at that time was about half pikemen : half muskeeters. It had poor firepower, and at the same time pikemen were unable to withstand Polish cavalry charge. Ratio changed over time. Carolean army consisted of more muskeeters, and they were supported by cavalry.

Moral-wise i'd say French during the revolution and Napoleonic wars

Tactical-wise (for their time) i'd say the Prussians during first half of 18th century

Most progressive at their time overall, i'd say Romans in the early imperial years

United States Marines or special forces.
