Why is the book of Revelation so weird?
Because we are living in the end times

because it's an undistinguished apocalypse (a common genre) written by a literal nobody, that got accidentally elevated into the biblical canon because the early church thought john of patmos and john the evangelist were the same john
by the time they realized their mistake it was too late

Did people in antiquity read apocalypses like people today read thrillers? What are some distinguished ones?

Cuz when Johnny boy was shipwrecked on the island the only thing to eat was wild mushrooms.
you can guess the rest.

Don't fall into the trap of trying to decipher it like a prophecy, it was written to convey a specific message, like all the other books of the New Testament, your ob is to understand the message, not unravel a mysterious code that tells you when the world is going to end.

Apocalypse literally means "revelation", ie any prophetic text, hence how we get "Revelation" from the literal "Apocalypse of John". It doesn't necessarily have the catastrophic connotations that the word does now
Daniel is the most authentic apocalypse in the canon and there are literally dozens of others ones that didn't make it into the bible, including apocryphal apocalypses of Peter and Paul

It's basically about Jesus coming down and destroying the Roman Empire, they had to write it in code to not piss them off.

It was written by a hermit on shrooms.

Seems like a reasonable theory. Revelation doesn't mesh with the rest of the New Testament at all, the idea that the people who defined the canon mistakenly thought it was the actual John who wrote might be the only way to justify why this psychedelic book managed to make it in
Just more evidence the Bible is a clusterfuck composed by clueless idiots and that stuff like the Dead sea scrolls and the Gnostic gospels is just as valid
