Also, not all of them were painted. That's a meme. There's a Roman fresco that shows a statue of Mars just marble white. I'll see if I can find it.

Reminder we can only see the base coats that were put on the statues, any paint applied over them to give more detail and texture would have been lost to time and we won't be able to see them.

Here.
because they're actually original by then

Looks like a depiction of a pale white guy rather than marble, his loan is clearly painted.

No. He's dark as fuck in the frescoes that actually represent him as a person. That's clearly just marble.

A lot of these sculptures and busts were made specifically to be at a certain height, such as on a pedestal or along the top of a wall. This means altering some of the proportions so that the profile looked better from the ground view. Obscured sections were left undetailed and unfinished.

That's just faded lad. You can see that the cloak was originally bright red .

Men have ALWAYS been painted darker than women, just by the fact that men go out into the sun.
Because naturalism becomes boring after a couple of centuries, especially when life is all about the end of days coming any moment now.

That statue of Constantine specifically is fucking gigantic. Colossi generally have different proportions from regular statues
