Would someone know whether wife beating was legal or illegal during the 16th century when Machiavelli wrote the Prince. I'm writing a philosophy paper on how Socrates would respond to the ideas of other political philosophers. Sources appreciated as well.

I don't see why it would be illegal. While it may have been frowned upon or uncommon, I doubt there was any institution that wives would go to and report any alleged beatings.
