besides losing the war? not much, Taiwan is doing pretty well for itself, comparable to South Korea and Singapore in development and living standards.

only thing holding it back is its claim to Mainland China, instead of declaring independence as a Republic of Taiwan.

of course mainland china would never recognize an independent taiwan, but it's the most reasonable of the outcomes to this political showdown.
