By the way, "Lombardy" in Northern Italy only has that name because that's where the capital of the Lombard Kingdom was located, Ticinum which is in modern day Pavia.

I think South Italy was permanently damaged by the brain drain caused by post unification emmigration to USA, Argentina, Brazil and North Italy (this last one never stopped)
South Italy wasnt doing worse than North Italy in the 1600s and 1700s.
