Would it have been possible to build a Mormon state in Deseret?

The endgame of the US had always been to stretch from sea to sea, it is utterly naive from the Mormons that they could suddenly found a sovereign state with such an enormous territory in the middle of 'territory to be colonized in the future', especially if you consider the tiny amount of mormons

also considering that this land was already claimed by the US, you can't be citizens of a country and pretend you've made a country inside that country

Could it have been organized as a state of the United States? Despite mormons being anti-slavery, the creation of Deseret would've taken territory from several states that could've been entered as free states into one larger free state in the west. Considering these areas weren't good for slavery, but would continue parity in the senate and reduce the need for more slave states, wouldn't the entry of Deseret into the Union have a lot of traction in the South?

too big
also there are other territories forming that would not want anything to do with mormons inside that made up border

Would borders along this size have been possible?

The areas in gray I mean

doubt people in colorado would approve of that dominance over the colorado river
