Germany was a vital piece of the puzzle.

Austria wouldn't have pushed for war with Russia if Germany wasn't going to support them. France and the UK (and their bazillion colonies) wouldn't have entered the war, even if it still happened, if Germany hadn't entered/attacked first. Germany literally evolved a little regional dispute into a global conflict.
