I don't think the Romans had any contact with the Chinese did they? If they did it was almost certainly after Jesus time. Hard to plagiarize the Tao when it was completely unknown in that area of the world at the time. Rather, both Lao Tzu and Jesus were enlightened and received their enlightenment from the same source, which is why their teachings are virtually identical.

sure, he has that element, but you havn't read him properly if you think that's all there is. the substantative, informal concept of humanity/humaneness (ren) is the absolute CORE of his philosophy. he never even defines it. this has nothing to do with utility or expedience. it is about authentic, empathetic, and compassionate relations with others.
